THE PRESIDENT, introducing Mr. Bullen and inviting him to present his paper, said he really needed no introduction to anyone present. He had founded his firm of Consulting Engineers in 1938 and had been concerned especially with foundation work. To many structural engineers he was well known as having been responsible recently for the structure of the Grosvenor House Hotel extension and as the Author of a paper he had presented in 1952 which had earned the Institution's Silver Medal. Also he had played a major part in the work of the Literature Committee over the last nine or ten years, being Chairman of that Committee for two periods; thus he had helped in the production
of the Institution's Journal and in obtaining suitable lecturers, and now he was to take the part of lecturer himself.
PRIOR to the construction of the new ferry aprons described in this paper, the terminal of the Canadian Pacific Railway on the west coast of Canada at Vancouver was linked with the Esquimalt and Nanaimo Railway on Vancouver Island by a barge ferry service from Vancouver to Nanaimo. Freight cars were loaded onto barges and towed by tugs across the Straits of Georgia, a distance of approximately 40 miles.
