AT present the design of light alloy trusses is made with the knowledge of the elastic behaviour of a truss and this method is controlled by the application of a factor of safety to the 0.1 per cent proof stress. There is no relation between the design load and the ultimate load and thereforc the true reserve of strength beyond working conditions is not established. No attempt is made to assess the strength of the strut in the truss beyond the onset of the slightest plasticity in the strut. J. E. M. Jubb
