Composite construction, using rolled steel beams and concrete floor slabs, has been used for construction of highway bridge decks and building floors for a considerable number of years. So far as the Authors are aware, no comprehensive experimental investigation has been undertaken to determine the effective width of floor slab which may be assumed to act as the compression flange in such beams. The following paper describes laboratory tests carried out on four small scale composite beam and slab floors, from which the effective flange width of the composite tee-beams has been determined in each case.
