The Structural Engineer

A general method for the analysis of Vierendeel bents with nonparallel members is presented. In the ' initial sway stage ' the frame undergoes translation and rotation of the joints in such a manner that the initial sway moments are in equilibrium with the applied loads. In the ' distribution stage ' the joints are balanced while the frame is again allowed to sway, thus preserving the equilibrium established in the initial-sway stage. The distribution yields the final moments directly. Numerical examples are given to illustrate the procedure. F.P. Wiesinger, J.F. Carney and S.L. Lee

On Thursday 13 January 1966 the motion ‘ That the initiation of research for the construction industry is best left to the research worker’ will be debated at the Institution at 6 pm. Those who are attending the debate at the Institution on 13 January on the control of research programmes may find the following information on the organization and control of research in this country of some interest.

Part 1 of the paper gives a versatile numerical procedure for determining the elastic buckling loads of slender beams loaded in the vertical plane. This procedure, which readily takes into account different loading and support conditions and simultaneously handles lateral bending and torsion, is then used to study the self-weight buckling of long beams during lifting.
