The Structural Engineer

Professor M. R. Horne and Dr. R. Narayanan: the authors are to be commended for attempting to produce a simple method for calculation of the strength of stiffened compression flanges. The claim, however, that the authors' method is in some way peculiarly superior to other procedures that have been proposed is unsubstantiated. M.R. Horne, K. Elsharkawi and D. Allen

The Structural Engineer

The paper is based on the 'stress-strain relationships' of the plate derived by Moxham. The theory developed by him is applicable to simply supported steel plates, with the unloaded edges free of pull in. In a stiffened plate, however, the unloaded edges are not free to pull in; the resulting strength predictions are, therefore, likely to be pessimistic. M.R. Horne and R. Narayanan

The Structural Engineer

The Royal Exchange Theatre opened in September 1976. This paper describes the genesis of the architectural form, the development of the structural design, and the analytical approach to that design. The assessment of the dynamic petformance of the structure, and the subsequent dynamic testing, are described in some detail. The paper deals also with the fire safety analysis carried out to justify the unprotected steel structure of the theatre. P. Morreau and N. Baldock

The Structural Engineer

What is a Code? In a few words Dr. F. Walley raises a large issue which in one way or another has exercised the minds of many engineers. He writes: Several people are questioning the nature and scope of Codes. However, there is one fundamental proposition which perhaps should be examined first.
