The Structural Engineer, Volume 63, Issue 11, 1985
Fuller’s construction, published in 1875, has been advocated since then us a method of analysing the stability of masonry arches. This paper highlights a weakness in the original method which does not appear to have been appreciated by other authors and which restricts its validity considerably. A technique is presented for making the method universally applicable. Professor A. Jennings
When I sat the Institution examination 25 years ago, I concentrated on the matter in hand and did not reflect on the future: to add corporate membership of such a distinguished Institution to one's credentials was sufficient objective in itself. It is therefore a memorable occasion for me to take up the duties of President on the Silver Jubilee of my becoming a corporate member. I am deeply conscious of the privilege of so doing and will exercise every effort to serve the interests of the Institution and its members in the year ahead. D.J. Lee
The Part 3 and Associate-Membership examinations 1985 proved, as usual, to be a real challenge to candidates. This report is made for the benefit of those who failed to clear the hurdle, and also for any candidates who may be considering first entry to either examination in the near future.
