The Structural Engineer, Volume 66, Issue 20, 1988
The tour commenced on Saturday 23 July and finished in South Africa, some 5 weeks later. It was routed westwards through Canada, New Zealand, Australia, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, and South Africa. This report chronicles and observes on the principal events which occurred.
This paper discusses some principles and describes some experiments in the development of an integrated system for the computer aided structural design of buildings aimed towards: -including as wide as possible a span of design activities -linking the various design activities such that data generated at any stage can be used directly in the stages that follow -developing a mode of use in which the designer is firmly in control of the process, i.e. the software plays a supportive role in the design. Institution recognition Our members will have appreciated the growing preoccupation with ‘things European’ over the last few months, as reflected in the content of The Structural Engineer. The Institution has been conscious for some time of both the hazards, and the opportunities, of the opening of the full internal market in 1992. D.W. Lazenby
