On 17 May last, we recalled our origins and aims as set out on the occasion of our first appearance in The Structural Engineer in December 1974. What we did not seek to
explain was the origin of our baptismal name - a matter which we know has puzzled not a few. As some may have guessed, we must needs claim some form of association with the Roman forerunner, ‘Verulamian’, of the town of St Albans, Hertfordshire. But then, why?
