The Structural Engineer

The work describes a new method for the design of the shearreinforcement required to safeguard against punching of flat slabs. It extends the range of application of recently proposed criteria for the assessment of the punching capacity of flat slabs without shear reinforcement, which are simpler and have been shown to provide a closer fit to test data than their code adopted counterparts. The proposed method differs from current methods in that its development has been based on concepts which underlie the compressive force path theory and have led to the derivation from first principles (i.e. without the need of calibration through the use of test data) of formulae applicable to both punching and shear design. The validity of the method is verified by carrying out numerical tests through the use of nonlinear finiteelement analysis which was shown to yield realistic predictions of the behaviour of flat slabs, with the slabs being found to have a higher load-carrying capacity when designed to the proposed method rather than the code adopted methods.
