As part of our governance process, nominations open from the 11 March for numerous vacancies across our Board, Council and Regional Groups.

These positions are a great opportunity to get involved in the future direction of the Institution, to build your network and to inspire the future generation of structural engineers.

The roles and their remit also align with our President Tanya de Hoog’s campaign “Engineering with purpose: aligning our values for global impact” and its Calls to Action, especially the action: “I commit to actively sharing my knowledge and collaborating with others to accelerate technical expertise within our wider engineering community in 2024.”

We’ll be emailing our voting members soon with details about how they can stand for election. Here’s an overview:

  • Vice-president (Trustee) vacancy: Eligible voting members of the Institution are invited to stand for election for Vice-President of India, Middle East and Africa (IMEA) global Regional Group.
  • Members of the Trustee Board x 2: Voting members are also invited to stand for election for our Trustee Board where we have two vacancies.
  • Ordinary Member of Council x 3: Voting members can stand for election for Ordinary Member of Council, where we have three vacancies.
  • Regional Group Nominations: As we move forward with the changes to the UK and Ireland Regional Group structure, there are vacancies across all eight of our UK and Ireland Regional Groups – Nominations for these positions will open on 20 May 2024.

C16 v C24: when to use UK-graded timber

Despite the UK having a world-class sawmilling industry, it is the second-largest net importer of forest products globally, with 80% – worth £9 billion – of its requirements imported annually. This over-reliance on imported timber not only weakens our domestic industry, but also undermines environmental progress, contributes to unnecessary carbon emissions, and reduces the potential for job creation.
