Shana, who works in AECOM’s Building Structures group and has delivered projects across Australia, Hong Kong, and the Middle East, joined the programme in search of a dedicated technical mentor to support her career progression.

Shana explains: “I joined because I wanted a mentor who understood the industry and had already gone through the career steps I’m about to take. Elevate gave me the chance to connect with experienced chartered engineers from across the world, which felt like an incredible opportunity,” she explains.

By coincidence, her assigned mentor turned out to be an ex-colleague working in the same building. “It was really interesting — we already knew each other, so re-establishing that relationship in a different light made the transition into mentoring much easier. Having someone close by meant we could just grab a coffee under our offices, which made meetings really straightforward,” Shana says.

The mentoring has been especially valuable in navigating day-to-day workplace challenges. “I often ask my mentor for guidance on ongoing conversations with colleagues or soft skills I’m developing at work. Having someone objective to bounce ideas off has been fantastic. The honesty and directness of his advice has also been refreshing — he doesn’t sugarcoat things, and that’s helped me reflect on the kind of engineer I want to be,” she shares.

Beyond immediate support, Elevate has encouraged Shana to think bigger. “At work it’s easy to get caught up in calculations, site visits, and urgent tasks. Elevate helps you step back and focus on the bigger picture. It’s motivated me to attend more IStructE events and while Elevate is about mentoring for personal development, it’s also pushed me closer to achieving chartership. Without it, I wouldn’t necessarily be thinking about these things,” she reflects.

Shana is no stranger to taking an active role in the profession. She serves as the Young Members Representative of the IStructE Victoria committee and has chaired AECOM’s young professionals’ group, Connect. She is also involved in ED&I initiatives and sustainability discussions, with a particular focus on embodied carbon reduction in her day-to-day work.

When asked what advice she would give to others considering Elevate, Shana is clear: “Just do it. There are no negatives to this programme, only positives. It’s a no-brainer.”  For her, the real strength of Elevate is its flexibility: “You can make it what you need it to be. The structure is there to guide you, but ultimately each partnership is shaped by the people involved — and that’s what makes it so effective.”

As Elevate marks its first anniversary, Shana’s story highlights the programme’s power to reconnect people, provide honest guidance, and create space for engineers to step back from the everyday and consider the bigger picture of their careers and the profession.
