Dr Mike Cook’s 2020 Gold Medal address

In an inspiring online lecture, Dr Mike Cook presented his compelling vision for the future. He argued that structural engineers have a vital role to play in reducing the impact of carbon in the built environment.

The Gold Medal is presented to one exceptional individual every year. It is IStructE’s most prestigious award. 2020’s Gold Medal has been awarded to Mike Cook. It recognises his leadership through the ongoing climate emergency. Mike’s address focussed on his vison for the next 50 years and how we can all play a part in tackling climate change.

During his address, Mike reflected on how his career has shaped his vison for tackling climate change. He shared the lessons he’s learned from over 50 years of practise.

Starting in the late 60's, Mike has learnt to create efficient and beautiful structures in harmony with nature. His work has been heavily influenced by his time as student with Ted Happold, Ian Liddell and Frei Otto. As an engineer with ARUP and Buro Happold, Mike always looked for ways to let nature speak in his projects. He very much believes in ‘touching the earth lightly’.

In 2019 Mike started the Structural Engineering Declaration of Climate and Biodiversity Emergency. It formalises his commitment to tackling the climate emergency and encourages others to join him.
"I want to look forward to the future – because the next 50 years matter a lot more to me than the last."
Dr Mike Cook
As Mike looked to the future, he encouraged us all to consider our role in the climate emergency. From undergraduates to experienced structural engineers, he argued that we can all make a significant difference.

Mike believes that structural engineering has never been more crucial to the planet. His lecture explored how we will play a vital role in how the next 50 years will unfold.
