Kamaruzzaman Tanzil shares his professional journey and what fascinated him early in his career path to chose structural engineering.

Engineering journeys often begin with curiosity and evolve through personal growth, academic discovery, and real-world practice. My own path into structural engineering was shaped by an early fascination with physics and advanced math, a desire to understand the forces that shape our environment, and a pivotal life event that redirected my ambitions with new purpose.

A change in course: from aviation to engineering

As a child, I dreamed of becoming a commercial pilot. The mechanics of flight and the science behind how things work fascinated me. However, in 2018, a tragic aviation accident reshaped my goals. During this period of reflection, I began to apply my passion for physics and advanced math toward the built environment, leading me to pursue a degree in civil engineering.

Originally from Bangladesh, I relocated to the United Kingdom to pursue higher education. As an international student, the opportunity to study in a country with a rich engineering heritage and global outlook marked the beginning of a new chapter, both personally and professionally.

Academic foundations: studying at London South Bank University

My academic journey commenced at London South Bank University, where I undertook a BEng in Civil Engineering. Like many students entering a multidisciplinary engineering programme, I explored various areas of the field before gravitating toward structural engineering. A core module, Design of Elements, first sparked my deep and focused interest in structural behaviour and system design. This turning point was instrumental in shaping my future aspirations.

The curriculum at London South Bank University offered a robust blend of theoretical knowledge and practical insight. I developed proficiency in key design and analysis software and explored sustainability themes, particularly through my final-year research project, ‘Integrating Sustainability into Design Projects’. This research project deepened my understanding of the engineer’s role in promoting environmental responsibility in engineering practice and reinforced my commitment to embed sustainable principles into my future work.

One of the most exciting modules of my academic journey was the Group Design Project. Designed to introduce aspiring engineers to the real-world challenges they will face; this module was invaluable in preparing me as professional from a student.

From classroom to construction site: early professional exposure

As I had no clear direction for my career when I began studying civil engineering, I realised the importance of gaining practical experience alongside academic learning to help define my career path. I proactively sought out opportunities to work on-site and in design offices during my studies. In my first year, I gained exposure to site-based engineering operations, which gave me a deeper appreciation of construction processes and site coordination.

Recognising my growing interest in structural engineering, I secured a summer placement at Mason Navarro Pledge during my second year and was fortunate to return to the firm after completing my final year.

Professional development: structural engineering in practice

Upon graduation, I commenced full-time employment as a Structural Engineer at Mason Navarro Pledge, where I continue to grow professionally. This role has allowed me to work on a diverse portfolio of projects, spanning new-build residential and commercial developments.

Working within a multidisciplinary design team, I have contributed to engineering solutions that balance technical rigour, practical feasibility, and architectural intent. I have also had the opportunity to refine my skills in structural analysis, detailing, and stakeholder communication, supporting projects from concept to completion.

Giving back: engagement with the Institution of Structural Engineers

In parallel with my professional role, I have remained deeply committed to the broader structural engineering community through active involvement with the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE). I currently serve as Vice Chair of the London Young Members Group (YMG) and Treasurer of the North Thames Regional Group (NTRG).

These roles have enabled me to advocate for young engineers and contribute to the planning and delivery of professional development activities, networking events, and outreach initiatives.

Looking ahead: growth, chartership, and contribution

My next professional milestone is to achieve Chartered Membership of the Institution of Structural Engineers, a goal I am actively preparing for. This step stands for not only a benchmark of technical competence but also a personal commitment to uphold the highest standards of ethical and professional practice.

Beyond chartership, I am driven by an intense desire to mentor the next generation of engineers, champion sustainability, and play an active role in shaping a resilient and inclusive built environment. Structural engineering, to me, is a discipline that blends analytical thinking with creativity. It is about solving complex problems and translating abstract concepts into tangible solutions that enhance lives and communities.

Conclusion: a journey still in progress

Every stage of my journey has reaffirmed my belief in the transformative power of structural engineering. From my first exposure to physics to my current role delivering built environment solutions, I remain motivated by the pursuit of knowledge, the desire to contribute meaningfully, and the value of collaboration.

While my career is still unfolding, I am proud of the steps taken so far and excited by the opportunities ahead. With curiosity, integrity, and dedication, I look forward to continuing to grow as a structural engineer and contributing to a profession that truly shapes the world.
