Eurocodes evolution explained: a video series

Discover the Second Generation Eurocodes in a series of videos answering key questions on the Eurocodes and their evolution

Dr Steve Denton, Chair of CEN/TC 250 'Structural Eurocodes', presents the aim and scope of the new series of videos on the Second Generation Eurocodes as well as the underlying approach of CEN/TC 250 to the evolution of Eurocodes.

Overview videos

Overview of the 'Eurocode evolution explained' video series
Overview of how we have approached the Eurocodes evolution

1. What are the Eurocodes?
This video explains what the Eurocodes are. It covers how they are structured, the difference between standards and regulation, the benefits of international standards, responsibilities for the Eurocodes, and how the Eurocodes interface with other standards.

2. The importance of the Eurocodes as design standards
This video explains why design standards matter. It covers the impact of the Eurocodes, how they enable the adequacy of designs to be verified, their role in enabling lessons to be learned, how they aid the translation of research into practice, and how the Eurocodes are embracing new societal demands, such as those relating to sustainability and climate.

3. Overview and background to Eurocodes evolution
This video explains the background to the Eurocodes and provides an overview of the Eurocodes evolution programme. It covers the history of the Eurocodes, Mandate M/515, the systematic reviews, the scale of the programme, an overview of the approach, and the key role played by the engineering community.

4. Objectives for the Eurocodes evolution
This video explains the objectives for the Eurocodes evolution. It covers the overarching objectives for the programme, the approach taken to enhance ease of use with examples of its application, the importance of building consensus and the approach followed in the effort to achieve exemplary level of international agreement.

5. Who has been involved in the Eurocodes evolution
This video explains who has been involved in the Eurocodes evolution. It covers the roles and contributions of the engineering community, Standardisation bodies, and the European Commission, EFTA and the EC's Joint Research Centre.

6. Structure and content of the second generation of Eurocodes
This video explains the structure and content of the second generation Eurocodes. It covers the overall scope and structure of the Eurocodes suite, new scope that will be included in the second generation, other important changes, and how to find out more about the detailed technical changes.

7. Developing Eurocodes under the CEN system
This video explains the way the Eurocodes have been developed under CEN's system. It covers the role of CEN and the national standards bodies, the principal steps followed in the Eurocodes development, the support provided by the CEN Technical Board (BT), the improvements compared with the first generation, and how interdependencies have been taken into account between the various Eurocode parts and with other standards.

8. CEN/TC 250 approach to deliver the evolution Mandate
This video explains CEN/TC 250's approach to deliver the evolution mandate. It describes the overall programmatic phased approach, the role of the project teams, the guidance for the development of drafts, the opportunities provided for comments, and the way background documents have been produced to create a technical audit trail for all the work.

9. Publication schedule
This video explains the schedule for the publication of the Eurocodes. It covers the key steps leading up to the publication and implementation of new Eurocodes, how the complex publication schedule is being managed, when documents will be made available to national standards bodies, the significance of having a common date of withdrawal for all first generation Eurocodes, and whether all countries will adopt the same approach to the transition to the second generation.

10. National Annexes
This video explains the role of National Annexes to the Eurocodes. It covers what National Annexes are and why they are so important, what they can and cannot contain, and how this differs from the first generation, and explains who publishes National Annexes.
