Could you contribute an article to The Structural Engineer on masonry or timber-framed structures?

The Structural Engineer invites proposals for articles to feature in two upcoming issues. If you would like to put forward a proposal for either issue, please contact [email protected] by 31 January.

If your proposal is accepted, articles of approx. 2,000–2,500 words will be required by the copy deadlines below to allow time for review and potential revision.

1) Masonry structures – June 2025

Articles are welcome on either the assessment and alteration of existing masonry structures, or the design and construction of new structures. A particular area of interest is works to domestic properties.

We will consider both practical articles discussing good practice or potential problems to be aware of, as well project case studies. Potential topics of interest include opening-up works and inserting beams; lateral stability; detailing; movement joints; anchoring; loss of wall ties and corrosion; differences between old and new brickwork.

Draft copy deadline: 7 March

2) Lightweight timber-framed structures – August 2025

Articles are invited on any aspect of designing and building lightweight timber-framed structures (including the use of prefabricated panelised elements). A particular area of interest is the scaling up of lightweight timber frames from small-scale residential projects to larger structures.

We will consider both practical articles discussing good practice or potential problems to be aware of, as well project case studies. Potential topics of interest include connections and their influence on member sizes; good detailing; collaboration with other disciplines; construction sequence and method.

Draft copy deadline: 15 April
