Professor John Nolan BSc, MSc, DEng(Hon),CEng, FIStructE, FICE has been presented with the CBE in the New Years Honours List, “for services to structural engineering and the construction industry”.

John is Chair of Birmingham-based practice, Nolan Associates, as well as a Past President of the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE), Deputy Chair and immediate past Chair of the Construction Industry Council and Visiting Professor of Innovation at the University of Birmingham.

Among his many achievements, John led IStructE’s focus on improving the knowledge base of structural engineering graduates, influencing subsequent IStructE initiatives including its Academics Conference, Essential Knowledge Texts and structural behaviour course.

He was also a key figure behind the launch of the Supplier Recognition Scheme for the 2012 Olympic Games, which lifted the prohibition on construction industry suppliers promoting their contribution to the highly successful Games.

John said:

“I am very proud to have been nominated for such a prestigious honour. I am also very conscious that it is often the leaders of teams that get honoured and that would never happen without the excellent work of their teams.

“I would like to express my appreciation for the tremendous work of the organisations that I have had the privilege of leading including the Institution of Structural Engineers, the Construction Industry Council and Nolan Associates.”
