Understand how engineers can and are shaping the future of climate change: part 3 of 5.

COP 26 bought everyone’s attention on to the increasing threat of climate change. At our Climate emergency conference, we looked at the progress made by the Institution as engineers work towards the climate goals of 2050. Watch this series of videos to find out more.

This recording focuses on carbon in materials. Watch to find out more on:

  • Setting targets for embodied and whole life carbon
  • Overcoming the challenges of carbon processes in design
  • Material production emissions 101 of steel, concrete and timber
  • Monitoring carbon on site and the role of good offsetting

Reasons to watch:

  • Gain an understanding of the increasingly ambitious environment of legislation on zero carbon initiatives
  • Discover new ideas to implement into your projects to reduce the amount of carbon
  • Evaluate how much impact you can have in shaping the future of sustainable structural engineering

Who should view:

All engineers of any level looking to understand more about their professional role in combatting climate change.

Speakers:

Matthew Wenban-Smith has been involved in the development and implementation of sustainability standards since 1994.  He was taken on by ResponsibleSteel in 2017, charged to establish ResponsibleSteel as a global, multi-stakeholder membership organisation with a mission to maximise steel’s contribution to a sustainable society.  The first ResponsibleSteel certificate was awarded in 2021.  As GHG Lead, Matthew is now responsible for the finalization of ResponsibleSteel’s requirements in relation to GHG emissions for the certification of steel.

Paul Astle is an Associate at Ramboll with more than 13 years’ experience in the design and construction of building structures. Paul specialises in the sustainability of building structures and has led sustainability training across Ramboll’s UK buildings business. Paul is also a member of the Low Carbon Concrete Group, developing a low carbon route map for concrete and on the steering committee for the Whole Life Carbon Network improving the consistency in carbon assessments.

Dr Will Hawkins is a Lecturer in Structural Engineering Design at the University of Bath.
