Annual grants supporting short-term projects that benefit earthquake disaster mitigation and post disaster reconnaissance efforts.

Research presented

Case study: earthquake resilience assessment of urban areas based on multiple data resources and automated macroscopic modelling, Thessaloniki, Greece – Konstantinos Skalomenos, University of Birmingham

Development of empirical fragility functions after the 2020 earthquakes in and around Turkey – Nurullah Açıkgöz, Boğaziçi University

Leveraging data-driven approaches to explore the effects of various disaster policies on post-earthquake household relocation decision-making – Chenbo Wang, University College London

This lecture is brought to you by the the UK Earthquake Engineering Field Investigation Team (www.eefit.org.uk) which is serviced by The Institution of Structural Engineers.

Speakers

Dr Konstantinos Skalomenos is Assistant Professor of Structural/Materials Engineering at the University of Birmingham. He has graduated from the University of Patras (MSc, PhD) and served as a JSPS post-doctoral fellow at the Disaster Prevention Research Institute, Kyoto University. He has received the 2023 IAAM Young Scientist Medal for his work on novel steel materials, while his team’s work on seismic-protective systems won the SDEE Ahmet Çakmak 2021 and the IStructE MCRG 2022 Best Paper Awards. He leads the Structures theme group in National Buried Infrastructure Facility, UK, and works closely with industry (Nippon Steel, Kawakin, ATKINS). He serves as a member on the IStructE international technical committee “Seismic and Dynamic Events”.

Nurullah Açıkgöz is an MSc student in the Department of Earthquake Engineering, Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute at Boğaziçi University (expected graduation date August 2023). His research interests mainly compose of engineering characterization of earthquake ground motion and loss modelling from multiple hazards. He currently works as a catastrophe modelling and data analytics specialist in a private firm.

Chenbo Wang is a PhD student in the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geomatic Engineering at University College London (UCL), co-supervised by Dr Gemma Cremen and Dr Carmine Galasso. His PhD research focuses on developing data-driven tools to support decision-making on societal challenges in the wake of natural-hazard disasters.
