Learn how to achieve accurate design and effective implementation with transfer slabs from concept to construction

Transfer slabs offer flexibility to designers, enabling a change in column grid above and below the slab to suit different layouts and uses. Although they are a popular solution, transfer slabs require careful design and recent guidance from the IStructE fills a previous knowledge gap and aims to promote best and safe practice.

In this webinar a case study will be shared to show what to consider when adopting a transfer slab and how to approach the concept design, including initial sizing. Finite element (FE) modelling is often used for reinforced concrete design and this webinar will provide guidance on how to model structures with transfer slabs appropriately in FE software.

Reasons to watch

  • Understand the key considerations when adopting transfer slabs.

  • Carry out initial sizing of a transfer slab.

  • Use finite element modelling in the design of a structures with transfer slabs.

Intended for

  • Those involved in design, checking and construction of concrete buildings with transfer slabs

  • Practicing and chartered engineers

Speakers

Patrick Hayes

Technical Director, IStructE

Patrick leads the Institution’s Building Safety Act initiative, which involves assessing the needs of members to meet the requirements of The Act and working with other PEI’s to produce guidance. Patrick Hayes is Technical Director at the IStructE and leads the technical and engineering policy development of the Institution working closely with the Institution’s Members. Patrick has been an engineer since 1988 and chartered since 1993 and has designed structures in both the UK and overseas, with experience covering schools, universities, laboratories, commercial, residential and mixed-use developments.

Alex Riddick

Senior Structural Engineer, Meinhardt

Alex is a Senior Structural Engineer at Meinhardt’s London office and a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers. He has extensive experience in the design and delivery of major multi-million-pound developments, including the landmark Kings Cross regeneration project in London. Alex has led the structural engineering for Tottenham Hale Central mixed-use development and was a key engineer on Atlassian Central, the world’s tallest hybrid timber building, located in Sydney’s CBD. Alongside his current work on commercial and residential schemes across London and the UK, Alex also serves as a mentor to Civil Engineering students at University College London, guiding them through their final year Integrated Design Project (IDP).
