In the context of net-zero targets and the growing impact of climate change, structural engineers will play an increasingly vital role in the adaptive reuse of existing buildings to minimize embodied carbon and extend the life of built assets. Accurate assessment and ongoing monitoring of structural condition are therefore essential to support informed decisions around refurbishment, maintenance, and long-term asset management. This course provides a valuable introduction to the principles and techniques of structural condition monitoring, equipping engineers with the practical skills.
By the end of the course you should be able to:
Understand the condition of existing concrete structures to identify signs of deterioration, assess construction quality, and inform maintenance or repair strategies.
Acquire and apply data collection techniques such as acoustic methods and ground penetrating radar for assessing structural integrity.
Interpret structural condition data using programming tools to support analysis and decision-making.

Vikki is a Chartered Structural Engineer with over two decades of experience spanning both academia and industry. Her recent work focuses on remote sensing technologies and digital platforms for monitoring infrastructure condition, with particular expertise in concrete deterioration. She has led and collaborated on research projects with organisations including National Highways and Gatwick Airport, developing innovative, non-contact techniques for assessing asset health. A Fellow of multiple professional institutions, she is committed to advancing sustainable infrastructure through teaching, research, and professional engagement.
Prof. James Martin is a geophysicist with extensive research experience, particularly in physical and chemical measurement systems, signal fidelity and its impact on subsequent data interpretation. He has extensive signal processing and data analysis expertise, including the development and characterisation of fibre optic sensor measurement systems. James has contributed to the invention of over 109 patent families, mainly within the geophysics and measurement spheres and is currently working to develop geotechnical surveying methods. James’ contributions has been recognised by being awarded the international Virgil Kauffman Gold Medal in 1999 by the Society of Exploration Geophysicists.

This practical course helps structural engineers to confidently approach a refurbishment or reuse project, looking at the initial steps to understand an existing structure, how to apply basic conservation principles and the design implications and considerations.
A hybrid conference on building confidence, managing risk, ensuring safety.
This two-day course provides participants with an understanding of the basic principles of temporary works design.
This course is designed to provide participants with the knowledge and experience of courtroom proceedings. Participants undergo cross-examination by a practising barrister in a protected environment to improve techniques and increase confidence when called to give evidence.
This half-day course is tailored for engineers operating within the domestic and small commercial sectors. It aims to equip participants with a comprehensive understanding of specific contractual and legal challenges they may encounter. Additionally, it highlights common legal pitfalls that can be mitigated through proper awareness and understanding.
A business plan provides a dynamic blueprint for operating and growing a business to achieve goals, financial targets, and operational milestones. This highly practical half-day workshop develops the skills needed for planning the medium and long-term growth of an SME.
This course is designed to provide structural engineers with a greater understanding of fire safety, key legislation, and the principles of risk analysis in order to ensure that adequate structural performance in fire is achieved. You will examine case studies of structural and non-structural failures as a result of fire.
This course provides an introduction to structural steelwork design to Eurocode 3 for building design.
