This online course introduces four core structural concepts, intuitively interpreted from the Principle of Virtual Work, together with implementation routes and physical measures, enabling structural engineers to design more effective, efficient and elegant structures.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, you should be able to:

  • Build a “tree of knowledge” linking theory, structural concepts, implementation routes and practical design.

  • Explain the four core structural concepts and their connection with internal forces, deflection and efficiency.

  • Develop structural intuition through equations, observations, physical models and real examples.

  • Identify implementation routes and physical measures that realise structural concepts in practice.

  • Apply the concepts to recognise and develop effective, efficient and elegant structural solutions.

Intended for

  • Graduate engineer

  • Mid-career engineer

  • Senior engineer/Team leader/Manage

  • Academic/Researcher

Trainer

Dr Tianjian Ji

Tianjian was Reader in Structural Engineering at the University of Manchester. He developed Seeing and Touching Structural Concepts for gaining an intuitive understanding by using simple physical models and appropriate practical examples. He is the author of two books: Understanding and Using Structural Concepts and Structural Design against Deflection.
