The Structural Engineer, Volume 12, Issue 8, 1934
Mr. H. A. WHITAKER, before presenting his paper, said that the subject was not new to the Institution, since Mr. H. W. Coultas had read a paper on it to the Midland Counties Branch in 1930. In the present paper, however, he had treated the subject in a somewhat different way, and had brought out more recent developments.
SIR,-AS you are aware, the Building Acts Committee of the Council has for some time past had under consideration the question of t,he use of cavity walls and hollow brick construction.
A very interesting paper on Troubles Bridge Foundations, by Mr. H. E. Brooke - Bradley, appeared in The Structural Engineer, December, 1933. It quite rightly stressed the importance of scientific soil investigations prior to the study and choice of a design for a bridge. The same paper also mentioned cases of serious trouble having arisen through unforeseen settlements of a bridge abutment. DIPLOM-INGENIEUR G. TSCHEBOTAREFF.
