Mr. W. MUIRHEAD, M.1nst.C.E. (Member), proposing a vote of thanks to Mr. Wallis for his paper, said he had indicated the direction in which we must go in connection with the facing of concrete. The possibilities were unlimited, and the thanks of the Institution were due to Mr. Wallis for having given the members the benefit of his experience.

SIR,-AS you are aware, the Building Acts Committee of the Council has for some time past had under consideration the question of t,he use of cavity walls and hollow brick construction.

A very interesting paper on Troubles Bridge Foundations, by Mr. H. E. Brooke - Bradley, appeared in The Structural Engineer, December, 1933. It quite rightly stressed the importance of scientific soil investigations prior to the study and choice of a design for a bridge.
