THE majority of the problems and examples discussed inthis paper arose on the Salonika
Plain Reclamation Works situated in Central Macedonia, and as this scheme is of some engineering importance a brief description of its aims and object will not perhaps be out of place.

The Control of Building by Public Authorities

FOR the purpose of this lecture I assume that the audience will have heard, or will have read, and will remember the informative lectures given in 1933 and 1934 by Mr. Roland Woods who is, I understand, Chairman of the Committee of the Institution which deals with those of your legal problems which fall within the title I have chosen. Also I assume, less plausibly, that members of the audience have read two lectures which I myself had the pleasure of giving to the Royal Institute of British Architects in 1922 and 1930. This second assumption is a sort of legal fiction, made so that I need not spend time upon ground which has been already covered-unless it is necessary to emphasize some point. My lectures were printed in the Journal of the Royal Institute of British Architects and members of the Institution of Structural Engineers will if they think it worth while be able to turn up back numbers.
