The Headquarters of the Institution at Upper Belgrave Street, S.W. 1
MY Presidential address to members of the Institution was to have been delivered at the opening General Meeting of the Session on October 26th. The outbreak of war made it impossible to hold the meeting and deprived me of the privilege of carrying out this obligation. This does not mean, however, that the work of the Institution is to slow down. Although we cannot carry out a normal programme, meetings will be improvised from time to time, with due regard to the lighting and travelling problems which will affect attendances, and I very much hope that the splendid support which members have given to former Presidents and Councils will continue in spite of the irritations and difficulties with which we are faced. I hope that all members-even those who have been obliged to- change their habitat and remove to other parts of the Kingdom, or even overseas will do all they can to support their Institution during the War.
Struts as usually employed in practice have their ends neither "fixed" nor “hinged” to the degree of perfection assumed in the simpler strut formulae and theories, at present existing. H.A. Warren
