1. INTRODUCTION.
THE author’s first impression on arriving in Mandalay was that the buildings there were
subjected to a concertina action resulting in bending stresses causing the cracks which had, in some cases, been sufficiently serious to merit the reconstruction of the building. This impression was supported by the type of cracks found.
