THE first practical application of reinforced concrete to piles and sheet piles appears to have been made by the late Mr. Edmond Coignet, of Paris, in 1894. He made two experimental reinforced concrete piles 16 feet long and 10 inches in diameter. One of these piles was hollow and the other one solid. These piles were driven into the ground and afterwards withdrawn and it was found that although the body of the piles
remained perfect after driving, the head of each of the piles was damaged.
