It is with deep regret that we record the death on the 9th October of Mr. Sven Bylander, a Founder Member of the Concrete Institute. Mr. Bylander was 66 years of age. He was born in Sweden and was educated at Ara and at Boras Technical College. He spent two years as a draughtsman in the Lindholmens shipyard at Gothenburg and gained further experience in Germany and the United States. He specialised in structural steelwork and during his career was responsible for the steelwork of many notable buildings.
In his paper " The Design of Jetties," Mr. Minikin has given us yet another piling formula. He does so because he is of the opinion (and rightly so) that a piling formula should contain a factor which makes allowance for the embedded length of the pile. This, it is stated in the paper, the Hiley formula does not do. That statement is clearly based on the assumption that the "c" in the Hiley formula is the temporary compression from tables.
