Mr. R.J. CORNISH (Member), proposing a vote of thanks to the author, said that the paper might be described as a model of what a paper presented to the Institution should be. It described some extremely clever and careful experimental work, backed up by theoretical work. He was glad to know that the author intended to extend his experiments to the case of compressive forces, and he hoped that Dr. Hendry would
present another paper to the Institution giving the results of these tests. In the meanwhile, this paper gave information which would be of great help to designers. Mr. Cornish congratulated Dr. Hendry on his photo-elastic work and his ingenuity in machining the flanged specimens out of the solid. The agreement between the stresses calculated from the photo-elastic experiments and those found by strain gauge observations on steel frames was excellent. The investigation of reinforced concrete
portal frame knees with electrical resistance strain gauges would be an interesting extension of the research. He concluded by moving a hearty vote of thanks to the author and again congratulated him on his excellent paper.
