The Structural Engineer

Mr. HILEY, in presenting the paper, showed many illustrations of the installations described, together with a coloured film showing the progress of the work at Uskmouth, which included aerial views of the station.

The Structural Engineer

The bearing capacity of shallow and deep foundations under a central load is briefly discussed, and the effects of eccentricity and inclination of the load are indicated. The total and differential settlements of foundations are estimated in relation to the soil and foundation characteristics and the stiffness of the structure. The settlement stresses in foundation and superstructure are considered, and recent observations on brick walls and cladded building frames are analysed. The lateral movement and tilting of foundations are estimated and illustrated by the results of some loading tests on model portal frames on clay and sand. G.G. Meyerhof
