After thanking the Branch for doing him the honour of electing him their Chairman, and reviewing the improvement in the strength of the Branch since the war, Professor Matheson continued as follows:- " Now I must turn to the main part of my task, which
is to deliver a Chairman's Address. It is one of the happiest traditions of this Branch that these affairs should be brief, and this is one of those traditions which
it is a pleasure to conform to.
Dr. S. B. Hamilton, whom the Institution welcomes as President for the Session 1954-55, brings to his office a wide and varied experience in several spheres of structural engineering- in research, in education, and in the practical work of everyday engineering.
