The Institution welcomes as its President for the Session 1955-1956 Mr. STANLEY VAUGHAN, who takes office on the 6th October.

TESTS made on portions of a ten-year-old reinforced concretc building of normal construction during the course of its demolition are briefly described, and the more important results obtained are discussed.

The testing of concrete by the ultrasonic pulse technique involves measuring the time taken for a pulse of vibrations to pass through a known length of concrete. The path length divided by the time of propagation givcs the pulse velocity, a quantity which is used as a criterion for studying tho quality of the material.
