The Structural Engineer, Volume 34, Issue 10, 1956
The Institntion welcomes as its President for the Session 1956-1957, Mr. J. GUTHRIE BROWN, who takes office on the 4th October.
THE PRESIDENT, introducing Professor Ockleston, said it afforded him particular pleasure to do so, on two scores.
A SUBSTANTIAL volume would be required in which to give a comprehensive survey of the structural steelwork involved in an extension to iron producing plant of the magnitude of ‘Seraphim.’ Consequently, it has been necessary in this short account to limit the features described to the main items only without reference being made to the multitude of interesting details involved in the build-up of such a large project. In addition to an account of the structural work involved in the buildings, some reference is made to erection problems and to those items needing careful consideration in view of the requirements of plant maintenance; these are matters which are often of as great importance in the design as the execution of the original scheme. This survey of the project is therefore concerned with the structural steelwork involved together with some passing reference to other sections of the work, much of which was designed, supplied and erected by others.
