The Stress Distribution in a Simply-Supported Beam with a Circular Hole

The Stress Distribution in a Simply-Supported Beam with a Circular Hole

THE problem of the simply-supported rectangular beam having a single circular hole is investigated for the case of bending with shear. An approximate mathematical analysis is presented along with the results of a photoelastic investigation. Results are also given for a rolled steel joist with a circular hole in its web from measurements with acoustic and electrical resistance strain gauges. J. E. Gibson and W. M. Jenkins
