1. This paper is devoted largely to two related lines of research and development affecting the safety and efficiency of modern structures. These lines of work had their origins in the First World War and arc even now only approaching a stage at which they can have much impact on structural design. It will be convenient in the first instance to discuss structural efficiency and structural safety separately, though, of course, our ideas and customs relating to both are very much interwoven. MOST electric overhead travelling cranes include two lattice-type box girders as the bridge for the ‘crab’ which hoists the load. The structural action of these girders is the subject of this extensive experimental and theoretical study. E. Lightfoot and N. Jackson

Brief historical notes lead up to 19th century examples followed by the developments to present date, characteristics of design and estimated costs of reinforced concrete towers with numerous examples designed to meet widely varying conditions and some rarer problems relating to existing towers.
