PROFESSOR A. J. S. PIPPARD: Reference is made to a formula for the strength of battened struts which I tentatively suggested in 1948 (not 1952 as stated).

AN efficient mechanical handling system will deliver materials not only to the right place but also in the correct sequence and at a time to synchronize with the manufacturing process. But should the methods of handling not match the process then confusion will ensue. Therefore methods of handling materials must not be judged on their own merits but should be considered as an integral part of a manufacturing process and it is only by a study of the operations involved in manufacture of a particular product that the "fitness for purpose" of a handling system can be assessed. PROFESSOR H. J. COWAN congratulated Dr. Humphreys on his detailed investigation of the torsional properties of prestressed concrete. It was gratifying to find that his full investigation substantially confirmed the conclusions which Professor Cowan and Mr. Armstrong had drawn from their smaller series of experiments carried out in 1950 and 1951.

THE phenomena of web buckling and its effect upon the load-carrying capacity of plate girders has been extensively studied in recent years. As a result much is now known about the behaviour of plane and stiffened webplates when subjected to the various load conditions normally encountered in plate girder design. K.C. Rockey
