Shear lag in aircraft and ship structures has been investigated thoroughly by several authors but the results of these analyses are inapplicable to the composite beam and slab structures used in structural engineering. In particular the use of effective flange widths derived therefrom are subject to suspicion. In this paper, the fundamental equations to analyse beam and slab combinations are derived and a comparison is given between this exact theory and current specifications.
