Each year there are many thousands of serious accidents on construction work ; all are costly in time, money and materials. Some are due to structural failure of both steel and reinforced concrete; the examples described show that these accidents could have been prevented in planning and supervision of erection and that the structural engineer can ensure that this is done. The bridge, or viaduct, at Angel Road, Edmonton, described in this paper is part of the Ministry of Transport’s development of the North Circular Road. The road at this point crosses the main line to Cambridge out of Liverpool Street Station. Previously, the road had been carried across the tracks by a reinforced concrete structure of 17 spans which had been built in 1908 and is believed to be one of the first bridges to be built in reinforced concrete in this country. It had a 24-ft. carriageway and was restricted to a load of 30 tons, as well as having a severe S bend. John Mason
