The problem considered in this paper is that of a rectangular slab of uniform thickness strengthened by four edge-beams; it is loaded transversely and supported at its corners on rigid stanchions. Symmetry of geometry and of loading is taken to exist about both the axes x = 0 and y = 0 (Fig 1).
D.N. de G. Allen and R.T. Severn
Most of the large amount of work on plastic collapse of structures has been concerned with the collapse of structures loaded in their own plane and hence the members are subjected only to bending moment, end load and shear force.
S.S. Gill and J.K.G. Boucher
The paper reviews the modern form of composite steel framework in which the structure is designed as a box shell and deliberate provision is made in the overall design for the contribution to load support and transverse stability from ancillary elements of the structure.
