This paper describes a method, based on the moment distribution method, for the calculation of bending moments due to sidesway in certain multi-storey frames. The method is based on the conventional methods in which the frame is assumed to behave in a completely elastic manner. The method could possibly be adapted for use with the slope-deflexion method, but this approach has not been considered herein.
An approximate general solution to the problem of contact pressure and displacement under a finite beam resting on soil has already been presentedl. The present article extends the method to axisymmetrically loaded circular slabs.
Tests were carried out to deterrmne if roof sheeting acted in conjunction with a rafter to form a tee-beam effect. The results showed that the stress m the sheeting was far less than would be reached in a true compound sectlon and appeared to depend more on the number of fastening bolts than on the actual width of sheeting used. Although the moment contribution of the sheeting in the experimental tee-beam was as great as 25 per cent of the applied moment, it 1s shown that in a real design the effect would be negligible.
