The article describes how simple models, made from balsa wood, paper and cotton, are being used to give students an understanding of the way in which from affects structural behaviour.
The stress energy concept may be used to provide compatibility equations for a structure when force variables are adopted in the analysis even when change of geometry
effects are important. It is thus possible to use stress energy to develop approximate methods of analysing suspension bridges. ln this paper the hanger load distribution is assumed to be a polynomial in the spanwise co-ordinate, which means that in the simplest case the analysis reduces to the well known elastic theory. When three coefficients are used in the polynomial the equations are found to reduce to a particularly convenient form and the resulting accuracy is likely to be adequate for preliminary design studies in certain cases. Some numerical results are given.
