Dr. I. Fells (University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne): ‘First let me say that I am relieved by the confidence of our two speakers. Clearly, they are reasonably happy about the relief of the explosions. I wonder, however, if I might put on a hat that I am unaccustomed to wear, and that is one of pessimism.'

The case for the experimental stress analysis of structures by the testing of models is examined. Tests of models of two composite beam/slab floor constructions, full-size prototypes of which had already been tested to destruction, established the technique and proved its reliability. A.S. Babb
