The following reports on the Part 3 (Membership) examination and on the Technician Test held in July 1971 have been prepared from the reports of the respective examiners and are offered as a guide both to those who are preparing for future examinations and to those members and others responsible for providing appropriate training and experience within the ofice. It is hoped too that the notes will be of help to lecturers and others in colleges offering courses in preparation for one or other of the Institution’s examinations.
The President and Secretary represent the Institution on PCUE-President's Committee for the Urban Environment. Other Presidents and Secretaries serving on PCUE which meets from time to time as required, under the Chairmanship of Sir Hugh Wilson, a past President of the RIBA, are from the Institute of Building, the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Institution of Heating and Ventilating Engineers, the Royal Institute of British Architects, the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors and the Royal Town Planning Institute, all professional bodies whose members are concerned in the creation and management of the manmade environment.
This new sports stadium providing covered accommodation for 50000 spectators is described in the paper. The plan shape of the roof resulted in variations in both height of the uprights and length of the supporting prestressed concrete cantilever frames which were all of precast hollow box segmental consfruction with glued joints. Methods of minimizing variations in deflexion at the cantilever ends due to Prestressing and long term creep and of adjustment of these during consfruction are described. With the Boulevard PBriphBrique running in funnel beneath part of the stadium the foundation problems as they affected the superstructure are also given. P. Fauveau and J. Schmitt
