This paper compares the more commonly used design rules for compression laps in reinforced concrete columns with the results of research carried out recently at the University of Glasgow. P.D. Arthur and J.W. Cairns

The Structural Engineer

Stability functions for beam-column supported on continuous Winkler foundation or driven into elastic soil are developed and tabulated for different values of axial load parameters and soil stiffnesses. They enable the rapid prediction of the elastic critical load of structures with some members supported by or driven into soil, having constant modulus of subgrade reaction, using a hand-computing method. Applicable to bearing piles and other related structures with full or partial penetration with any ends restraints. Approximate formulae for the stability functions are derived. S.Z. Al-Sarraf

A design method is developed for the use of masonry infilled steel frames as sway bracing. The method is based on theoretical work presented by the authors in an earlier paper. B. Stafford Smith and J.R. Riddington
