The Structural Engineer, Volume 66, Issue 3, 1988
In 1983 meetings were held between representatives of BSI and senior members of the Institutions of Structural and Civil Engineers, the latter supporting the views of the Institution of Structural Engineers, although they did not wish to become involved in drafting and publishing Codes themselves. C.J. Evans and R.D. Anchor
The Code of Practice discussed in this paper is the latest in a long line of Codes on this subject-CP 7, CP 2007, BS 5337, BS 8007. The content of these documents has changed radically only once, when BS 5337 was written some 10 years ago and limit state design was added. The evolutionary process has now continued, and the original permissible stress method of design has been largely deleted from the Code. R.D. Anchor, A.H. Allen, Professor B.P. Hughes, D.W. Quinion and E.H. Thorpe
Niamh McCloskey reflects on her personal experience of the challenging reality of returning to work after maternity leave, questioning whether workplaces truly support women in this transition and highlighting how, with the right support and recognition of the new perspectives and skills that motherhood can bring, we can retain mothers and allow them to thrive in underrepresented industries.
