I am delighted to have the opportunity to give this, the Maitland Lecture 1988. The title of my address is ‘The developing world’-the poor, economically backward countries of sub-Saharan Africa; the heavily indebted countries of South America; and the fast-developing, high growth, manufacturing countries of the Pacific Basin. As a result of my Chairman’s Address to the Thames Valley Branch in 1987, I have been asked to write and present the introduction to the Ordinary Meeting being held on 26 January 1989.
