‘The Building Research Establishment’s (BRE’s) main role is to advise and carry out research for Government, principally the Department of the Environment (DOE), on technical aspects of buildings and other forms of construction, all aspects of fire, and environmental issues related to buildings’.
The paper examines developments in geotechnical matters affecting the foundation behaviour of low-rise buildings since an earlier paper was published in The Structural Engineer in 1978.
