In order to ensure that the delicate instrumentation controlling a certain chemical plant constructed in Israel would remain at reasonably constant temperature given the sometimes rapid fluctuations of atmospheric conditions, it was decided to establish the control unit in an underground cavern available in the vicinity. A five-floor building was to be erected to contain all the instruments. This was not only to be air-conditioned from a completely detached unit, but was also to be isolated against vibrations emanating from other plants and the air-conditioning pumps by means of rubber insulators.

This paper presents a simple beam line model for the analysis of braced Composite frames with semi-rigid beam-to-column connections. Based on the proposed model, equations and design charts for determining the moments and deflections of the composite beam, that take into account both joint flexibility and variation of beam sectional properties, were formulated. The moments and deflections so obtained were demonstrated to be in excellent agreement with those determined from rigorous finite element analyses. Since the proposed equations are reliable and easy to apply, the role of semi-rigid connections may be better appreciated and utilised with confidence by practising engineers.

The City of Lille's Euralille development includes a new TGV station. This paper describes the development of the design of the roof which comprises slender steel arches which support the roofing by means of cable-stiffened beams. It also describes various aspects of working on a project in France, and some details of the construction phase. The fire engineering studies are covered in some detail.
