The academic sector, alongside other sections in the UK, has been subjected to severe rationalisation. In addition to these changes, different performance indicators have been tagged on to many aspects of academic activities. Research and related activities are targets for evaluation by research assessment exercise (RAE) panels to audit performance expectations. The salient indicators are: - levels reached and the numbers involved in the doctorate awards, in addition to the percentage of success-rates in PhDs between successive RAE visits - quality of publications in academic and professional journals of national and international standing, - the extent to which research funds are awarded by the Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), the leverage for release of which would depend on the resources secured from industry and thus the relevance of research to industrial and national priorities R.
