Economics of stainless steel reinforcement in whole-life costing Dr Hywel Davies, who is Chairman of the BSI Committee B/500/3 on Durability, has written from Bedford: The project report on the Guildhall East development (The Structural Engineer, 8 December 1998) outlined the reasons behind the decision to use stainless steel reinforcement on this project.

I had thought it would be crowded because of the important information you have provided about historic structural iron, its behaviour in fire, and the tests you carried out.
Standing in what will be the Great Court of the British Museum in November last year, the famous circular Reading Room was revealed for the first time in 150 years - at the centre of a building site. When it was designed in 1852 the Reading Room was invisible from the outside, embedded in the core of the British Museum which had been constructed between 1823 and 1850. Its external walls were concealed from view and the courtyard itself was used for storage, filled with book stacks. Kathy Stansfield
